Ryan Fox has produced a strong finish at the BMW PGA Championship, sharing sixth place at Wentworth as American JJ Spaun stormed home to claim the title.
The Kiwi closed with a four-under 68 to finish the week at 14-under, three shots behind Spaun.
Fox was impressively consistent across the four rounds, carding scores of 68, 68, 70 and 68 in an encouraging performance ahead of his Presidents Cup debut for the International team at Medinah.
Spaun finished at 17-under after a five-under 67, making four birdies over his final five holes to secure a two-shot victory in his first appearance at the DP World Tour’s flagship event.
The 2025 US Open champion arrived at Wentworth disappointed after missing out on a captain’s pick for the United States Presidents Cup team and admitted that provided extra motivation.
“I played with a huge chip on my shoulder,” Spaun said. “I definitely had something to prove this week.”
Spaun appeared likely to face a much tighter finish when Spain’s Manuel Elvira eagled the par-five 17th to draw level at 17-under.
But Elvira’s challenge unravelled at the last.
Needing a birdie to win outright, he found trouble after laying up into a fairway bunker before eventually making double bogey.
That dropped Elvira into a tie for second at 15-under alongside Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott and Aaron Rai.
McIlroy also had an opportunity to challenge Spaun late in the round but was unable to birdie the final hole after finding a bunker from the tee.
For Fox, the result provides an ideal lead-in to the Presidents Cup after a strong all-round week against one of the best fields assembled on the DP World Tour this season.
The 2023 BMW PGA champion finished only three shots from the winning total and will now turn his attention to Medinah, where he is set to make his first Presidents Cup appearance.
