Kiwi Tim Wilkinson has shot a 5-under 67 to finish in 16th place after the opening day of the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego.

After missing the cut last week, Wilkinson started his round perfectly with two opening birdies on holes 10 and 11 with a follow-up birdie on the 14th. Another birdie and two bogeys allowed him to turn onto the front nine on 2-under par.

His second nine was free of dropped shots and he managed to grab birdies on 5, 6 and the 9th hole to finish with 67 for his round and is now only three shots behind the leaders Patrick Reed and Alex Noren who finished their opening rounds with 8-under 64.

Scottie Scheffler is in outright third with 7-under.

Fellow Kiwi Danny Lee found the going tough, finishing with a 2-over 74.

Lee will tee off in the second round at 7.50 am Saturday morning NZDT while Wilkinson tees off at 6.00 am NZDT. Coverage begins at 9 am on Sky Sport 6.

Across the other side of the globe, Ryan Fox has finished the first round of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic with a 1-over 73.
