Voke Shines as Spaniard Puig Claims Australian PGA Crown

Spain’s rising star David Puig has stormed to the biggest win of his young career, pulling clear of a stacked leaderboard to secure the Australian PGA Championship at Royal Queensland — joining the legendary Seve Ballesteros as the only Spanish winners of the event.

But from a Kiwi perspective, it was Nick Voke who delivered the weekend highlight.

Auckland professional Nick Voke carded a superb final-round 66, producing three birdies down the stretch to climb into a share of third place alongside Australian favourite Marc Leishman.

Voke, who began the day right in the mix, showed maturity and patience on a demanding Royal Queensland setup — landing his best finish yet in a major Australasian event and signalling he’s ready for a big 2025 season.

Co-leading heading into the final round, Puig wasted no time separating himself from the pack. With 31 players starting the day within six shots of the lead, the 23-year-old LIV golfer reeled off a burst of early birdies to take control.

His bogey-free Sunday and composed 5-under 66 was enough for a two-shot win over China’s Wenyi Ding, who also closed with 66.

“It feels unbelievable, especially to win here in Australia,” Puig said. “I’ve had a few close calls this year, so to finally get it done feels amazing.”

The victory is Puig’s first on the DP World Tour and his third professional title.

Kiwi Results: Strong Showing Across the Board

It was a promising week for the New Zealand contingent:

  • Nick Voke — T3 (15-under)
  • Daniel Hillier — 5th
  • Josh Geary — T19
  • Kazuma Kabori — 25th
  • Ryan Fox — 39th

Hillier briefly threatened the leaders before fading late, while Fox couldn’t replicate his electric opening round but still finished inside the top 40 as he builds toward next week’s Australian Open.

Local favourites Leishman and Min Woo Lee both had chances at the turn but couldn’t convert enough birdies to pressure Puig. Former world number one Adam Scott finished seventh after a frustrating day on the greens.

The Australian PGA doubles as the opening event of the 2025–26 DP World Tour season, kicking off just a fortnight after Rory McIlroy clinched the Race to Dubai.

McIlroy is set to headline the field for next week’s Australian Open, where the Kiwi lineup will again be looking to make waves.
